Teaching self defense for over 37 years. For more than 15 years, he has taught in Dover, Mass. Literally thousands of children and adults have taken and enjoyed his self defense classes. Duane Allen holds black belts and advanced degrees in 3 disciplines: Tae kwon do- 3rd dan black belt: Goju Ryu- 3rd dan black belt: Hapkido- 5th dan black belt. (dans indicate level of accomplishment. For example, to earn 3rd, one must study and advance 3 levels beyond black belt, passing rigorous tests. "Master Duane Allen"? Because of his accomplishment, Duane Allen has the right to be referred as 'master' in these martial arts. But because of his friendly teaching style, he forgoes that formal title- thousands of students know him simply as "sensei". Duane Allen is known for how he teaches. Unlike formal-style schools that attempt to force every student to adopting the forms of a particular style, his teaching is customized- based upon the abilities of each student. The result is satisfied students. The story of free style martial arts academy: When Duane was in his teens, his mother was attacked by a street predator. He then became determined to teach her and his two sisters how to defend themselves. But they had no interest in martial arts and had no desire to learn ancient forms of martial arts. He realized that he would have to 'cut through the fat' if he wanted to create a system of self defense that was easy to learn and highly effective. Duane Allen's teaching incorporates numerous karate styles, with focus on practical self defense techniques. For example school children learn how to deal with bullies through words first, not through kicking. Teens learn how to defend themselves and how to deal with real world situations. And since women often end up in different self defense situations then men, Sensei teaches them appropriately. It is this attention on each student, combined with proven teachings that has earned Duane Allen his impressive reputation.
